EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
RKG Associates, Inc. (RKG) and Woodburn and Associates were retained
to assist the Town of Oakland, Maine, in preparing design alternatives
and a marketing plan for redeveloping and rejuvenating its downtown
commercial district.(1) To this end demographic and economic characteristics
of the Oakland market area(2) have been researched, an inventory
of downtown properties has been developed, community input has
been garnered from a variety of sources and via a variety of means
and visual design alternatives have been completed. This report
presents the key findings of this research, resulting recommendations
(with an overview of potential costs associated with those recommendations)
and a proposed action/implementation plan.
1. Including
properties along both sides of Main Street as it runs from the
intersection with Kennedy Memorial Drive through the downtown
to a point just south of the intersection of Oak, Church and Center
Streets.
2. Consisting
of the Towns of Oakland, Belgrade, Sidney and Rome in Kennebec
County and Smithfield in Somerset County.
